Nature

The “Balade le bourg-Les Bernards” hike is a very easy 6.7 km route with a duration of around 1 hour 30 minutes and 100 metres of elevation gain. A walk to the summit of Le Puy de Cros and back, with its calvary, offers views of the Puy de Dôme.

The path around Le Puy de Cros leads around a hill whose basalt layer has protected it from erosion. The so-called Roman bridge at Glavin lies on the PR hiking trail “Le Pont du Glavin”. The circular hike “Le tilleul d’Olby et le pont du Glavin”, which crosses the Pont du Glavin, also begins in Olby.

Olby is still considered a well-known centre for trout fishing and has several clear streams.

History

The Église Saint-Pierre in the centre of Olby was completed in 1898 to replace a Gothic building. Archaeological excavations in Olby’s parish garden in the 1990s uncovered 117 burials from an extensive early medieval necropolis, including 49 sarcophagi made of trachyte. Today, only the motte castrale remains visible at the archaeological site in the area around Olby’s church.

The Tilleul de Sully in Olby is more than 400 years old. A lime tree in Olby was awarded the designation “Arbre remarquable de France”.

The Moulin des Bernards is supplied by a millrace from the Ceyssat stream. The Four banal des Bernards and its associated washhouse were formerly used by around 15 families, who took turns baking bread every two weeks. The former sawmill in the hamlet of Les Viradas was in operation until the 1960s; its crane mast is still visible.
