Culture and History
In Rochegude, Saint-Privat-d'Allier, stands the Chapelle Saint-Jacques-de-Rochegude, a Romanesque chapel dating from the 12th century. It preserves traces of paintings that apparently date from the 17th century. Since 1 October 1974, the chapel has been listed as a historic monument by decree.
Château de Mercoeur was built as a fortress by the Mercoeur family in the 13th century at an elevated location. The keep of Château de Mercoeur was constructed to provide a view of the two castles of Saint-Privat and Saint-Didier d'Allier. The Église Saint-Privat has been listed as a historic monument by decree since 7 January 1926.
In the wider regional surroundings of Saint-Privat-d'Allier are the Fortresse de Polignac, a castle, the Ancien Prieuré Sainte-Catherine, a monastery, and the statue Notre-Dame-de-France, a monument. The Prieuré de Chanteuges, a church, is also located nearby.
Cycling
The 15th stage of the Via Allier à vélo runs from Prades to Saint-Privat-d'Allier. The 16th stage runs from Saint-Privat-d'Allier to Pont-d'Alleyras.
On this 16th stage, the route runs above a narrow and difficult-to-access section of the Allier gorges and then descends to the river. It follows the D40 and includes technically challenging descents that require attention and confident handling.
