Culture
The Basilique Saint-Julien was built between the 12th and 14th centuries. Its contemporary stained-glass windows are distributed across 37 window openings. The basilica is visible from a distance even before arriving in Brioude; for many pilgrims, it was a stage on the Way of St James. Access to the Chapelle Saint Michel of the Basilique Saint-Julien is only possible as part of a guided tour for safety reasons.
Le Doyenné has a heraldic ceiling classified as a Historic Monument and was restored as a venue for large-scale exhibitions. La Maison de Mandrin is a municipal art gallery in Brioude featuring carefully selected exhibitions of visual art.

The Fontaine Saint Julien is topped by a vaulted Romanesque structure from the 12th century with two remarkable capitals. It remains a pilgrimage site, particularly during the novena to Saint Julien. On 28 August, the feast day of Brioude’s patron saint, Mass is celebrated at the Fontaine Saint Julien.
Nature and Trails
Brioude lies on the Allier, is surrounded by medium-sized mountains and is situated in a protected, varied natural landscape suitable for outdoor activities. The Allier is used for fishing in Brioude.
The trails described include the 20.74-kilometre GR470 stage from Brioude to Villeneuve d’Allier, as well as PR026 La Roche Dragon, an 8.85-kilometre hiking route in Brioude.
Crafts and Museums
The Hôtel de la Dentelle offers individually tailored lace-making courses; its workshop can also be visited during the visit. Mosaïque Atelier Céline Cadenel offers the production of glass mosaics as well as introductory courses for adults and children. Visitors are welcomed there by appointment, receive explanations about the craft and see the works displayed there.
The La Maison du Saumon et de la Rivière aquarium in Brioude displays more than 800 fish from nearly 40 species. The digital museum Micro-Folie Brioude projects more than 5,000 high-resolution works from 11 thematic collections. Micro-Folie also includes a virtual reality room and a mini-lab; during the school holidays, it was open from Wednesday to Saturday. The virtual reality area offered people aged 13 and over immersive 360-degree content, with the programme changing regularly.
Public Places
The Brioude Tourist Office is located in a place with an impressive view of the Basilique Saint-Julien. The Médiathèque Jacques Cabotte in Brioude is open to everyone, admission is free and it offers exhibitions as well as events centred on reading and writing.
