Culture and History

Beauzac was a fortified settlement dating from the 12th century. Its historic buildings include the church dedicated to Saint John, which was first mentioned in a document on 1 April 1179. Its Romanesque choir dates from the 12th century, while the crypt is considered unique in the Velay region.

Two pointed-arch gates and a defensive tower remain from Beauzac’s former fortifications. On the second floor of Beauzac Castle is a large hall with painted ceiling beams dating from 1567; the castle also has a remarkable vaulted kitchen. The Béate House dates from the 17th century.

The Chapelle du Fraisse-Bas is the surviving part of a former Benedictine priory and, with its elegant Romanesque bell tower, overlooks the narrow Ramel valley. The Pont de Confolent is listed in the inventory of historic monuments. It was built in eight months and began operating in January 1863.

Landscape and Trails

The small Chapelle Sainte-Marie-Madeleine stands in the middle of the Madeleine Plateau. The volcanic plateau is crossed from north to south along a well-maintained path. Three orientation tables on the Madeleine Plateau offer views of the Loire Valley and the Mézenc, Meygal, Pilat and Forez massifs.

Routes and Activities

The “Patrimoine et rando” route in Beauzac leads to the medieval Church of Saint John and its Romanesque crypt; picnic areas have been set up along the route. On the GR 3 “Source et gorges de la Loire”, there is a four-day route comprising three overnight stays from Aurec-sur-Loire to Beauzac, with a return via Monistrol-sur-Loire.

The T45 “Sur les hauteurs de Beauzac” trail is classified as difficult and is 17.8 kilometres long. Mountain biking route 24 “De l’Ance à la Loire” is designated as a difficult route in Beauzac.

The Écuries des 3 Vallées in Beauzac offer recreational horse riding. Group lessons, games, courses and trail rides are also offered there by prior reservation. The Écuries des 3 Vallées offer horse and pony activities for children aged three and over.
