Culture

Around the Couderc, a former fairground in the village centre, visitors can admire the houses of Carladez. The Maison Bory dates from the 19th century and housed a smithy on the ground floor. The Maison Morzières dates from the 17th century, has a projecting dovecote and is considered a small manor house.

In Escoubiac, preserved chestnut drying sheds form part of the hamlet’s traditional architectural heritage. The Église Saint-Hilaire is an early 15th-century building and is listed as a historic monument. It has a northern chapel dating from the 15th century and a southern chapel dating from the 17th century. Its bell tower consists of the western gable wall, crowned by three arches.

The Saint-Jacques Chapel stands on the Rocher de Ronesque and overlooks the Goul Valley and the Carladez. The chapel on Ronesque, dedicated to Saint James, was mentioned as early as the 15th century and was a priory whose appointment was the responsibility of the chapter of Saint-Géraud d’Aurillac. The present Saint-Jacques Church was built in 1900 west of the older church in the Romanesque Revival style.

Nature

The “coteaux de Raulhac et Cros de Ronesque” Natura 2000 site covers part of the municipality of Cros-de-Ronesque. Le Rocher de Ronesque is a basalt plateau created by an inversion of relief and offers views over Aveyronnais-Carladez and Aubrac.

La Ronde des Sécadous runs through the heart of chestnut and oak woodlands.

Hiking

Two orientation panels at the Ronesque site help visitors find their bearings while taking in the panorama. The Boucle des Secadous is a 4.3-kilometre, 1-hour-30-minute, blue-marked moderate route with 120 metres of elevation gain. It leads to the hamlet of Escoubiac and its chestnut drying sheds.

The Boucle du château de Messilhac starts in the village square of Cros-de-Ronesque. It is a 15-kilometre, five-hour, red-marked difficult route with 701 metres of elevation gain. After crossing the Goul, it returns towards Cros-de-Ronesque via the RD59.
