Vaumas: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Culture

The Église Saint-Martin de Vaumas dates back to the 12th century. The existence of an initial church building in Vaumas is documented as early as the 12th century; the present church developed between the 14th and 16th centuries.

The church was built from limestone from Chavroches, red sandstone from Liernolles, and granite from Vaumas. Its bell gable is divided by four openings and flanked by a cylindrical tower. Inside are three notable statues from the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

The church is dedicated to Saint Martin in memory of his journey along this road during his evangelization of the Morvan. The church bell also contributes to the building's unique history: it dates from the 13th century and has an unusual shape, as its height is twice its diameter. The bell bears two inscriptions – a raised inscription in uncial script and another engraved with a burin in the 15th century.
