History
The Church of Saint Hippolyte is probably a Romanesque building dating from the 11th century; it was extensively modified at the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries, in the 15th century and in modern times. Its two nave bays preserve Romanesque architectural features, including a former western portal, engaged columns with sculpted capitals and windows on the north side.
The historic centre of Le Veurdre preserves the original town plan. Rue du Tour des Murs follows the course of the former fortifications, of which two original towers remain. Le Veurdre has a historic village walking tour, the “Parcours historique du village”, with a published map.
Three successive bridges were built to cross the Allier River between Le Veurdre and Livry; the earliest known evidence of a crossing at this location dates back to the Middle Ages. The present-day Pont du Veurdre was rebuilt in 1948 as a prestressed concrete bridge using the balanced cantilever method. It was one of the first bridges of its kind in Europe and was inaugurated on 5 February 1949.
Boat graffiti in the masonry of the house at 14 rue d’Allier recalls Le Veurdre’s former shipping activity.
