Culture and History

The bastide of Monflanquin was founded in 1256 under the patronage of Alphonse de Poitiers. Its history is presented at the Musée des Bastides, an interpretation centre dedicated to the development of the new medieval towns in south-western France between the 13th and 14th centuries.

The Tour de Ville is regarded as a historical walk through Monflanquin, leading from the period of stoneworking to the founding of the town in 1256. The walk leads to Cap del Pech and then on to the Place des Arcades.

The Église Saint-André dates from the 13th century. Its façade is protected as a historic monument.

Paths and Townscape

The Carrérots of Monflanquin form a network of pedestrian streets. Along them stand houses made of stone, brick and half-timbering dating from the 13th century.

The Place des Arcades lies at the heart of the bastide, is a popular place for commerce and is surrounded by arcades.

Market and Museum

Monflanquin's traditional market takes place on Thursday mornings from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the Place des Arcades.

The Musée des Bastides offers a family trail with a costume area, a medieval shop, a painting game and puzzles to solve together. The museum also offers an escape game about the bastide of Monflanquin, which is accessible by reservation only.
