Coast and Water
The Réserve naturelle du Courant d'Huchet encompasses the municipalities of Léon, Moliets-et-Maa and Vielle-Saint-Girons. In this protected area, the Courant d'Huchet connects the Étang de Léon with the Atlantic Ocean.
The Plage de Vielle on the lake is sheltered from the wind, shallow and supervised in summer. Various types of fishing are permitted year-round on the shores of Lac de Léon.
Au fil de l'eau offers pedal boats with or without slides, rowing boats, stand-up paddleboards and electric boats that do not require a licence. It also offers canoe trips on the Palue River, as well as across a lake and its marshland, with explanatory circular routes lasting 1, 2 or 3 hours.
In the wider region around Vielle-Saint-Girons, the named landscape features La Dune, Plage des Casernes and Plage du Penon can be found; all three are beaches.
Culture and History
The sauveté of Saint-Girons was established in the 11th or 12th century; two of its four boundary pillars have survived.
The Puits Crouzet is visible beneath a glass pyramid with interior lighting; a short explanatory text provides additional information on site. The first “puits filtrant” in Saint-Girons was built in 1856 using a technique invented by the engineer Henri Crouzet.
Saint-Girons lies on the coastal route of the Way of St James, known as the “voie littorale”, which runs from Soulac to Bayonne.
Active Pursuits
The Circuit des Tucs in Vielle-Saint-Girons is an easy, 8.9-kilometre circular hiking route through the Landes forest massif.
At Plage de la Lette Blanche, a wooden walkway leads to the top of the dune, offering extensive views.
Saint-Girons Plage can be reached by bicycle via the Vélodyssée and offers forest paths for walks.
