Saint-Loubouer: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Saint-Loubouer combines distinctive reminders of its history with vibrant traditions. The Tour Maubourguet, the municipality’s still-standing eastern gateway, is regarded as its symbol; it is also classified as a historic monument. It was formerly closed with a grating and a ground-level drawbridge, which was raised at night or in the event of attacks.

Culture

The history of the abbey and the church is also present in the townscape. The Abbey of Saint-Loubouer was destroyed in 1569 during the Wars of Religion. The Romanesque remains of the church include the west façade and the portal; the sculptures on the tympanum reveal the symbol of the Agnus Dei.

The old washhouse of Saint-Loubouer was rediscovered in 2016 after having been hidden beneath blackberry brambles. Until the middle of the 20th century, Bugade, traditional laundry washing, was practised there. Visits to the washhouse were possible.

The former Hôtel des Barons de Noguès became Saint-Loubouer’s present-day town hall and has a Renaissance-style entrance. The former town hall, in turn, features a pointed-arch entrance and remains of an old window with tracery.

The local events culture includes Course landaise: an association in Saint-Loubouer organises various public events related to this tradition. The Saint-Loubouer arenas could accommodate 1,500 seats.

Surroundings

The historic site of Abbaye de Pontaut and the church of Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste d'Aire are located near Saint-Loubouer. In the wider region are the ancient site Roman Villa at Lalonquette and the church of Abbaye de Saint-Sever.
