Maylis: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

There has been a Marian shrine on the hill of Maylis since at least the 14th century. Since the 13th century, all the neighboring parishes have come to Maylis in procession; the place remains a pilgrimage site.

Culture

The shrine welcomes pilgrims seeking refuge there. The large church of Maylis is a Neo-Gothic building dating from 1875 and houses old and contemporary works of art.

Religious festivals also shape the place throughout the year: in Maylis, the Fête des champs is celebrated on the third Sunday after Easter. The Fête des lys, now known as the Fête des familles, takes place on or around 20 August.

At the entrance to the abbey there is a small shop where guests and passing pilgrims can find products made by the monks of Maylis.

Landscape

The abbey overlooks the Chalosse countryside; when weather conditions are suitable, the Pyrenees can be seen on the horizon. The abbey's park and monastic gardens invite visitors to take walks.

Getting around

The Circuit des 5 Clochers route leads through the Chalosse countryside and takes in five churches. The approximately 55 km loop of the GRP de pays de Chalosse is mainly laid out around Montfort-en-Chalosse, Mugron, Montaut, and Maylis. From the top of the church tower in Maylis, around twelve surrounding church towers can be seen.

To avoid very small roads, it is recommended to approach the abbey via the neighboring village of Saint Aubin, which is located on a main road, or via Doazit, and then continue on to Maylis.
