History
In Pellegrue, a look at the Saint-André parish church takes you far back in time: it was first mentioned in 1082, while the present-day church appears to date from the 12th century. The church portal has been listed in the French register of historic monuments since 1995. Archaeological investigations at the site have demonstrated intensive use from antiquity to the present day, as well as a Merovingian necropolis with at least 17 monolithic sarcophagi.
The historic bastide of Pellegrue has a traditional orthogonal layout. It includes a square surrounded by buildings, including the town hall.
Pilgrimage Routes
The Voie de Vézelay runs through the east of the Gironde département from Sainte-Foy-la-Grande to Pellegrue. In July 2025, Pellegrue received the “Commune-halte chemins de Compostelle” label awarded by the Agence française des chemins de Compostelle for three years.
Since 2003, Pellegrue’s municipal pilgrims’ hostel has been located in the centre of the bastide above the tourist office. It is open from Easter to All Saints’ Day; reservations are handled through the town hall.
Landscape
The Boucle du Bois Bourru route passes through forests and over slopes that are now planted with vines. Another route is the Circuit du Pin Franc, a 7-kilometre circular hiking trail in the municipality of Pellegrue.
During migration, cranes fly over Pellegrue and stop overnight in the surrounding area.
Local Life
In Pellegrue, the old weekly market is still held on Wednesdays. In addition, pig and livestock markets were held there annually.
