Ports and Landscape
The port of Biganos is the oldest port on the Leyre. Typical colourful huts in the shade of large oak trees characterise the port. It accommodates 150 boats of various sizes, which can reach the Bassin d’Arcachon after travelling 2 km along the river.
Port des Tuiles lies between reed beds and Baccaris, vegetation typical of the Leyre delta. In the past, it was used to store lime-coated tiles, which were used to collect oyster spat.
Island and Waterways
ÃŽle de Malprat was enclosed by dikes at the end of the 18th century for salt production; this use was later replaced by extensive fish farming. On the island, freshwater meadows fed by precipitation and an artesian well meet much larger saltwater basins fed primarily by seawater.
ÃŽle de Malprat is home to a meadow ecosystem with amphibians, otters, European pond turtles, mink, waterfowl and insects. It can only be visited with a guide and after booking in advance with the tourist office.
Canoeing, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, sea kayaking and trips in a galupe are permitted on the ESI Leyre. The ESI Leyre waterway can be navigated by paddle boats for 90 km from Commensacq (40) to the Leyre delta near Le Teich and Biganos (33).
History and Culture
Traces of the Moulin de Pont Neau have been documented since at least the 16th century. In the 19th century, the Moulin de Pont Neau was adapted for paper production. Information panels there explain its successive functions as a grain mill, forge and paper mill.
The work «Le Vieux Père» is work no. 04 of the Forêt d’Art Contemporain in Biganos. The statue of «Le Vieux Père» is still covered with a cloth; Laurent Kropf leaves it in this state at the inauguration.
