Arès: Holiday Apartments and Houses
Nature
The 496-hectare Réserve naturelle nationale des Prés salés d’Arès – Lège Cap-Ferret is shaped by the rhythm of the tides. Its habitats range from mudflats to areas that remain permanently above the water. The area is important for the migration, wintering and reproduction of numerous wetland bird species.
The “Les prés salés, entre terre et mer” trail passes through this landscape, running through settling ponds, woodland, salt marshes and dunes. Another route, “Les 3 eaux de Saint-Brice”, winds between several ponds, through the forest and along a coastal path.
The Domaine de Saint-Brice is located within the municipalities of Arès and Andernos-les-Bains and is owned by the Conservatoire du Littoral. Maritime pines, oaks, willows and aspens grow in the Domaine. The undergrowth includes gorse, broom, ferns, strawberry trees and heather. Two ponds enhance the ecological importance of the preserved Domaine de Saint-Brice.
Getting around
Arès is connected to long-distance cycling routes: the Tour de Gironde à vélo includes the town as stage 14 on the route between Lacanau and Andernos. La Vélodyssée, the French section of EuroVelo 1, runs for 1,250 km from Roscoff to Hendaye, crosses the Bassin d’Arcachon and allows for a stopover in Arès.
Anyone wishing to visit Arès can plan to rent a holiday apartment.
The family trail “Les Pistes de Robin: les secrets d’Arès” leads from the Jetée d’Arès to the Port Ostréicole and uses a series of puzzles.
Culture
The Port Ostréicole d’Arès features a series of blue, yellow and green oyster huts. At the Micro-Folie d’Arès, the offerings include a digital museum and a virtual reality experience. The digital museum provides access to some of the works held by several national museums.
The Square des Grands Principes Républicains presents the motto “Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité, Laïcité” as well as portraits of historical figures such as Charles de Gaulle, Simone Veil and Samuel Paty.
The “Les 3 eaux de Saint-Brice” walking trail also leads to the ruins of a former métairie.
