The Faluns of Salles contain shells as well as remains of fish and whales, including teeth, compacted in shelly limestone. Traces of the faluns can be found in old enclosure walls, in some houses and in the rock face on the right bank of the Eyre bridge.

Culture and History

The Moulin de Dubern is a watermill built in the 15th century that was converted into a grain mill in 1930 and refitted in 1989. The Saint-Pierre Church was built between 1861 and 1862 according to plans by the Bordeaux architect Gustave Alaux, replacing a Romanesque church.

“Trois sans nom” consists of three ghostly figures among trees and dense vegetation. The figures are made from self-supporting beams. The Tour ronde dates from the 18th century and was the ferryman’s accommodation.

The Château de Salles was built between 1657 and 1659 by the Pontac family. The Moulin de Martinet belonged to the Knights of Malta and ceased operations in 1964. The ruins of the La Fayette transmitter and the Château Haussmann are located in the wider regional area around Salles.

Cycling

A cycle path runs through the forest along a former railway line connecting the Bassin d’Arcachon with the Bazadais. The cycle path from Salles to Mios is 8 km long.
