Illats: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
Culture and History
The Église Saint-Laurent is a small single-nave church with a semicircular apse dating from the 12th century. Its west façade is adorned with a Romanesque portal porch featuring carved voussoirs. The west portal was listed as a monument historique by decree of 21 November 1925; the church was likewise listed by decree of 1 September 1986.
The two megalithic avenues known as the Hountètes in Illats are traces of human presence dating back around 5,000 years.
Wine and Sightseeing
Château Vénus offers a guided tasting of four Graves wines: one dry white Graves and three red Graves. The winemaker experience offered there also includes insights into the vineyard, winemaking in the cellar and ageing in barrels.
Château Jouvente offers tours, wine tastings and activities for children. Visitors can discover a 17th-century manor house, a rare underground cellar and a barrel cellar there.
Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Illats can use the Église Saint-Laurent, the two châteaux and the Ciron as local reference points when making their selection.
Landscape
Over thousands of years, the Ciron followed an earlier course of the Garonne through the landscape of Illats, carrying large quantities of sand from the Landes. Today, the Ciron flows near Illats beneath a gallery forest that creates a microclimate.
Hiking
The “BOUCLE D ILLATS” hike follows convenient forest paths through the Landes girondines and along the banks of the Ciron. It starts at the small car park behind the church in Illats.
