Sainte-Croix-En-Plaine: Holiday apartments and holiday homes
The history of Sainte-Croix-en-Plaine is considered to have begun with the founding of a Benedictine convent south of Woffenheim between 1006 and 1035 by Count Hugues IV d’Eguisheim and his wife Heilwige de Dabo.
History
The fortifications enclosing the houses and abbey of Sainte-Croix-en-Plaine can be dated to between 1230 and 1250; no more precise construction date has been recorded. Visible remains of the former town wall and the former moat have been preserved.
The former castle, built on a motte, disappeared at the end of the 18th century; part of it remains in the former primary school “Le Château”.
Two steles at the Kosakenloch site commemorate a bloody battle fought there in 1813. The Fosse des Cosaques memorial site has an information board explaining the history of the site and the organisation of the armed forces present there in 1813.
Culture
The choir of the Church of Saint Bartholomew dates from the first half of the 15th century. The church also has a Callinet organ dating from 1840. Its case and instrumental section are classified as historic monuments: the instrumental section was classified on 6 February 1975 and the case on 11 December 1980.
Three relics of the Holy Cross, mounted in the form of a crucifix, are still kept in the church today. The altarpiece in the Chapel of the Virgin Mary comprises ten statues: God the Father, Joseph of Arimathea, John, Mary Magdalene, Nicodemus and five putti.
Leisure
