Culture and History
The ruins and the outer curtain wall of the Château du Wineck are protected as historic monuments. Objects found during excavations are displayed in the keep. This historic ensemble is complemented by the statue of Saint Nicholas, which has been classified as a protected object since 1 September 1978.
The Église Saint-Nicolas is also part of the village’s history. It was built in 1719 as an addition to an existing chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The bell tower was added in 1895.
As a result of the war, the Église Saint-Nicolas was largely destroyed and restored ten years later. The church’s opening hours are listed as Monday to Sunday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The circular hiking trail “Circuit rando - du Sommerberg au château du Wineck” begins at Katzenthal Town Hall. It is 6.5 kilometres long, takes two hours, includes 321 metres of ascent, and is suitable for everyone. The puzzle walk “Au fil de la vallée des chats” leads through Katzenthal’s winding streets and past the Château du Wineck.
