In the Le Canal district of Wolxheim, on Chemin du cimetière, stands the Chapelle Saint-Denis. The building dates back to the 15th century and was already mentioned in 1342. Admission is free, and the chapel can be visited freely. Inside are two paintings by Carola Sorg and a two-headed statue of Saint Denis.

The statue of the Sacré-Cœur was erected on the Horn in 1912 as a symbol of peace. The sandstone and limestone quarries of Wolxheim were exploited by Vauban from 1681 onward. Wolxheim’s canal district was created in 1682 during the construction of the Canal de la Bruche, which connects Wolxheim with Strasbourg.

Wine

Written evidence of viticulture in Wolxheim dates back to 742. The Wolxheim wine-growing area includes the Altenberg Grand Cru. Viticulture in Wolxheim is famous for its renowned Riesling. The Altenberg vineyard lies at the foot of the Horn and has a particularly dry microclimate.

The “Point de vue sur l'Altenberg” viewpoint offers panoramic views of the Altenberg Grand Cru; in clear weather, Strasbourg Cathedral can also be seen behind the Horn. The viewpoint is accessible via the Sentier viticole de Wolxheim and the Sentier des poètes. Visiting the Sentier viticole de Wolxheim is not recommended during the grape harvest.

Paths

The Canal de la Bruche is a 20-kilometre-long waterway with eleven locks. The former towpaths along the Canal de la Bruche have been converted into a cycle path. The “Du canal de la Bruche au vignoble” cycle route reaches Wolxheim; the large gates built by Vauban are installed there.

The “The Chapels between Vineyards and Canal” hiking trail leads to the Marie Auxiliatrice chapel in Wolxheim.
