Schiltigheim – Half-Timbered Houses, Brewing Heritage and Roseraie

Schiltigheim can be discovered via the approximately 3-kilometre-long Chemin du Patrimoine heritage trail. The route leads through Vieux Schilick and includes 14 stops featuring 17th-century half-timbered houses, Art Nouveau and modernist buildings, as well as former inns. The trail can be followed independently; information panels are provided at each stop. The materials are available in French, English and German, while the audio versions are additionally available in Alsatian. History

The brewing hall of the former Brasserie de l’Espérance at 10 rue Saint-Charles was classified as a historic monument by decree dated 13 April 2026. The origins of Ferme Linck date back to 1675, when Georg Freyss commissioned the construction of a residential building there. Around 1897, Ferme Linck was converted into a wagon-making workshop, which operated until approximately 1963. Several exhibitions on the historical heritage of the industrial town of Schiltigheim are now held there.

Villa Scheyder was built in 1906 for its first owner and architect, Franz Scheyder, as part of the Heimatschutz movement and its regionalist approach to architecture. Villa Scheyder at 55 route du Général de Gaulle in Schiltigheim was fully entered on the list of historic monuments by decree dated 7 July 2022.

The Ancienne Brasserie de L’Espérance, also known as Brasserie Heineken, at 10 rue Saint-Charles in Schiltigheim is partly listed as a historic monument and partly classified as a historic monument. The protected complex includes the brewing hall, the entrance to the water tower, the mosaic in the former entrance to the workers’ residence, the entrance to the former administrative building with its stained-glass window, cellars, and the former “La taverne des brasseurs” restaurant.

The former Ancienne grande brasserie de la Patrie Schutzenberger at 8 rue de la Patrie in Schiltigheim was founded in 1740. Buildings from the beer production chain have been preserved on the site of the Schutzenberger brewery, including the malt house, boiler house, engine house and the first manor house. The surviving Schutzenberger brewery is considered a remarkable testimony to the region’s industrial and technical heritage, as well as one of the last representative examples of the industrialisation period of Alsatian breweries.

Festivals and Cuisine

Schiltigheim’s traditional Fête de la Bière takes place every year on the first weekend of August at Place Alfred Muller, in front of the town hall. The festival features numerous activities centred on beer and brewing heritage, traditional dishes and snacks, as well as a selection of beers from local brewery partners. This event therefore brings brewing traditions, regional partners and culinary offerings together within a shared event setting.

The Roseraie was created between 1926 and 1929 by a group of railway workers who loved roses. It contains more than 4,000 rose bushes representing 390 different varieties.
