Merkwiller-Pechelbronn: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Culture
The museum in Merkwiller-Pechelbronn traces the history of Europe’s first oil production site, which operated from 1740 to 1970. At the Musée Français du Pétrole, seven video stations provide access to filmed archives from Pechelbronn. They explore topics such as geology, drilling, pumping, prospecting, and mining extraction.
The Cité Boussingault was created in 1923 by SAEM, which managed the oil extraction. The farmhouse living quarters were converted, and the stables were transformed into residential buildings. In addition, residential buildings with four apartments each and two houses for engineers were constructed.
The industrial heritage also includes the “Ensemble Industriel” in Merkwiller-Pechelbronn, which comprised a mine, oil wells, and an oil refinery.
History
Guided outdoor tours of Le K’RO de Pechelbronn at the former Clemenceau oil field site are available by reservation for groups or individuals. The site was once an important location for a particular form of oil extraction.
The first surface exploitation of oil sands at the site was begun in 1745 by F. d’Eyrinis and L. P. de la Sablonnière. The Boussingault farmhouse, built between 1840 and 1850, comprised a dwelling and two large stables. It was used by L. F. Lebel and Boussingault for agricultural chemistry experiments with products derived from petroleum.
The expansion of the village of Merkwiller-Pechelbronn was linked to oil production. In 1924 and 1926, residential buildings were relocated northwards towards the workers’ housing estates.
Hiking
The Musée Français du Pétrole offers discovery hikes ranging from a few kilometres to just under ten kilometres. These explore the surrounding landscape and the area’s oil history as presented by the museum guides.
The circular trail „Following in the Footsteps of Oil“ is 8.5 kilometres long, includes 120 metres of elevation gain, takes approximately 2.5 hours, and is considered easy. It leads visitors to discover Pechelbronn’s architectural and industrial heritage.
