A former spring in Tõutsi village is considered the source of the Pühajõgi on the basis of local traditions and natural features.

The Võhandu River became known through a book written in 1644 by Johann Gutslaff, pastor of the Urvaste parish. Completing the entire Lake Pühajärv Hiking Trail takes 3 to 6 hours; the route can be covered on foot or by bicycle.
