Otepää combines winter sports, a lake landscape and Estonian history in an unusual way. The 22,430-hectare Otepää Nature Park, Estonia’s largest protected area, stretches around the town. Cross-country skiing and active days in Otepää

The Tehvandi Sports Centre is an important starting point for sporting activities. When conditions are suitable, up to 5 km of illuminated cross-country ski trails for classic and freestyle skiing are available there. A considerably longer challenge is offered by the 63 km Tartu Marathon cross-country ski route. It starts at the stadium of the Tehvandi Sports Centre and leads via Väike Munamägi, Matu, Harimägi, Kuutsemägi and Palu to Elva.

Outside winter, the Tehvandi Sports Centre also offers several opportunities for active days. The 2.5 km marked Tehvandi mountain bike trail has varied terrain and is suitable for all ability levels. There are also disc golf facilities and health trails for walking. The 4 km Apteekrimäe hiking trail starts and ends at the sports centre on Mäe Street. At the northern tip of the lake there is a beach, ball courts, a children’s playground, rest areas, cafés and a pier.

For a varied outing, Otepää Adventure Park offers climbing courses, a 350 m flight over the castle valley and a catapult jump from a height of up to 20 m. The park also has a safe course for children. At Otepää Wakepark, visitors can go wakeboarding and water skiing. In winter, Otepää Winterplace in Linnamäe Valley complements the offering with snow tubing, a toboggan run, an ice rink, an igloo cinema and a winter play area. Traditional sledging is generally possible on the ice rink at Lake Pühajärv; when conditions are suitable, hiking skates and fat scooters are also used.

History, the flag and special views

In addition to nature and outdoor activities, Otepää offers notable historical sites. The Eesti Lipu Muuseum is located in the Otepää parish house. It commemorates the consecration of the blue, black and white flag in this building on 4 June 1884. The Lutheran Otepää Maarja Church is also associated with the Estonian national flag. The Neo-Gothic church also features an 1880 altarpiece and a Kessler organ dating from 1853.

The Otepää Hill Fort ruins comprise the remains of a stone castle founded by Bishop Hermann in 1224. Europe’s oldest known firearm was also found there. A different view of the surrounding area is available from the 34 m-high observation platform on Tehvandi’s K90 ski-jump hill. It is located 218 m above sea level, can be reached via a spiral staircase and a lift, and is closed in winter.

A Friday in Otepää can begin at the “Otepää OTT” farmers’ market: from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Estonian food, sweets, vegetables, local meat products and handicrafts are offered in the central square. The “Flavours of Otepää” restaurant week takes place in spring and autumn and offers special three-course menus featuring regional ingredients. Such events can be easily combined with a trip that takes local cuisine and everyday culture into account alongside excursions.
