Otepää Parish: Nature, Trails and Estonian History

Otepää Parish combines expansive nature, distinctive viewpoints and a surprising amount of history. The Otepää Nature Park covers 222 square kilometres of the Otepää Uplands. At its centre lies Pühajärv, a 290.7-hectare lake with a curved shoreline and four islands. Several trails with clearly different lengths are available when planning an active day. The Murrumetsa hiking trail is 3.5 kilometres long and takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours. The Apteekrimägi forest trail covers 4 kilometres and takes about an hour. Those who prefer a longer route can plan the 15-kilometre Kekkose hiking trail, which is also suitable for mountain biking, cross-country skiing, jogging and fitness walking. The Pühajärve-Kääriku trail is 11 kilometres long; in winter, an 8.5-kilometre ski track is maintained there.

Active experiences for different travel days

The Tehvandi and Kääriku sports centres offer year-round training and competition opportunities for winter and summer sports. A cycle path has been completed along the Otepää–Kääriku route. In addition, Osaühing Loodusturism offers guided outdoor excursions including canoeing, kayaking, kicksledding and snowshoeing. A guided kicksled hike at Pühajärv takes 2 to 4 hours and covers approximately 7 kilometres of winter trails.

The offering also includes special altitude and active experiences. Otepää Adventure Park has various climbing courses, a 350-metre zip-line ride across the fortress valley and a catapult attraction that rises up to 20 metres. A safe course supervised by a professional team is available there for children. At the foot of Väike Munamägi, Munaka Bike & Hike Park has a chairlift and rents out special enduro bicycles. The viewing platform at the Tehvandi ski jumping hill is 34 metres high and can be reached by stairs or lift. Harimäe Observation Tower is 28 metres high; its highest platform is at a height of 24 metres and offers views of the Otepää Mountains, the Väike-Emajõgi Valley and the Karula Uplands.

History, crafts and regional cuisine

Otepää is also suitable for days spent combining nature and history. The ruins of a stone fortress founded by Bishop Herman in 1224 remain at Otepää Hill Fort. Europe’s oldest known firearm was also found there. Otepää St Mary's Lutheran Church has a Neo-Gothic altarpiece entitled “Christ on the Cross” from 1880, as well as a Kessler organ from 1853. In summer, the church doors are open to everyone. The Otepää Winter Sports Museum at Tehvandi Sports Center offers another insight into the region’s identity. As early as 1884, Estonia’s first blue-black-white tricolour was consecrated in Otepää as the flag of the Estonian Students’ Society.

For culinary discoveries, Murimäe Winery offers a tour of the vineyard and winery. An introductory course there also teaches visitors how wine is made from various ingredients. At the Otepää Farmers’ Market Shop, you will find food and handicrafts from local producers. Sangaste Rukki Restaurant uses Sangaste rye flour in its dishes, milled at the Loona Farm mill in Võrumaa.
