Sillamäe: Coast, Architecture and Waterfalls

Sillamäe combines a sea coast, impressive urban architecture and varied nature experiences. The beach promenade connects the historic city centre with the coast. It features an adventure trail and a distinctive multi-storey observation tower that is seven metres high. Anyone looking for walks by the water and distinctive city views when choosing a holiday apartment in Sillamäe will find a clear focus for planning their trip here.

Architecture and History by the Sea

Mere puiestee features a symmetrical design characteristic of the 1950s, with façades in the Stalinist neoclassical style. The street also includes a historic pavilion and an architectural ensemble by the sea. In the Old Town, the staircase on Kajaka Street is a reminder of the city’s neoclassical urban development area. It was originally built in the 1950s and renovated in 2019.

Another important site is the Sillamäe Cultural Centre, built in 1949. It is recognised as an architectural monument and preserves Stalinist architecture from the 1940s and 1950s both inside and outside. In the basement, a permanent exhibition on the city’s Soviet period is housed in a former air-raid shelter. Sillamäe is therefore also suitable for travellers who want to combine their stay with architecture and urban history.

Museum Experiences for Different Age Groups

The Sillamäe Museum is open from 10:00 to 18:00 Tuesday to Friday and from 10:00 to 16:00 on Saturdays. Its permanent exhibition consists of two parts: the first provides an overview of the city’s origins and development, while the second is located outdoors and offers virtual reality experiences. The museum also provides craft workshops, ranging from simple handicrafts to elaborate embroidery.

At the museum’s “Müstiline Sillamäe” park, children can hire three pedal cars and several electric cars. For a special historical perspective, there is the adventure “Salapärane Sillamäe – linna varjatud ajalugu”, which can be booked in advance. Access to a new exhibition is granted by special permission; virtual reality brings Sillamäe’s hidden history to life. The experience also includes tasting period-style pastries and a handmade carbonated drink. The museum also offers guided tours in Sillamäe and the surrounding area.

Waterfalls, Parkland and Coast

Those who enjoy alternating between sightseeing and nature during their holiday can plan a variety of landscape experiences. Sillamäe City Park is located near the historic Old Town and the beach and is used for walks and recreation. Merepark covers approximately 20 hectares and is Sillamäe’s largest recreational park. It includes a bathing beach, a pine forest, fire pits and walking paths. Beside the Langevoja waterfall, there is a rest area with fire pits that is suitable for a picnic.

The Langevoja cascade forms a 10-metre-wide and 2-metre-deep gorge and consists of two stages. The Ukuoru waterfall is 7.5 metres high and has a single stage. From there, views open up over the Päite cliff, the city of Sillamäe and the sea bay. The limestone coast also crosses Sillamäe and shapes the character of the surrounding area. In Sillamäe, the Sõtke River is dammed by three dams, forming a cascade of reservoirs unique in Estonia.

Choose the Right Base for Your Trip

When looking for accommodation, you can therefore first decide which experiences should define your stay: architecture and museums, walks along the coast, or waterfalls, parkland and picnic areas. A holiday apartment or holiday home in Sillamäe provides a suitable starting point for planning your days individually, without restricting the trip to just one type of experience. Your stay becomes particularly varied when you combine culture, nature and activities shared with children.
