Narva: Fortress, Riverside Promenade and City History

Narva combines a striking fortress, historic city views and a riverside promenade approximately 1 kilometre long. Hermann Castle is more than 700 years old. It acquired its present appearance during the period of the Livonian Order from the 14th to the 16th century. A permanent exhibition in Narva Castle explores the history of the site from the arrival of the first Danes on the banks of the Narva River to the present day. This means that a visit need not be limited to individual walls or towers, but can be connected with various historical periods.

The 51-metre-high tower of Tall Hermann offers views of Narva, the Kreenholm factory and Ivangorod Fortress across the river in Russia. Narva Town Hall is also an important cultural site. The art gallery of the Narva Museum on the Gloria Bastion is housed in a former granary dating from 1777. The permanent exhibition “Elu või karma? A different perspective on Narva emerges during the Kreenholm excursions organised by the Narva Museum. They convey more than 160 years of factory history amid monumental industrial architecture. The excursions take place by reservation and on Sundays at 12 noon from April to the end of October. In addition, a free Kreenholm QR walking tour leads through the district’s historic streets and conveys its history with the help of QR codes.

The casemates of the Victoria Bastion are also part of the range of experiences. Guided tours explain Narva’s historic defence system and the role of the bastions in times of war and peace; escape games and other programmes are also available. Registration by telephone or email is required for the visit. Põhjaõu, an experimental history centre and entertainment venue, is located in the north courtyard of the castle.

Riverside Promenade, Park and Active Days

The Narva Riverside Promenade is located in the historic centre along the riverbank. It is bordered by the Narva River to the east, the bastion walls and Hermann Castle to the west, the Port of Narva to the north and the Joaorg recreational area to the south. The promenade includes, among other things, Sun Square with a summer café, fountain and sundial, as well as the Swedish Terrace, a recreational area for families with lion-shaped attractions for children.

For walks with historical connections, the Dark Garden is a good choice. It is Narva’s oldest city park, was laid out on the Victoria Bastion at the end of the 19th century and has been protected as a natural monument since 1959. Two memorials in and around the park commemorate different wartime events. Those who want to explore Narva by bicycle can choose between city bikes, mountain bikes, fatbikes, tandems, children’s bicycles and kick scooters in the Joaorg recreational area.
