Holiday apartment in Slagelse: culture, trails and experiences

Slagelse combines Danish history with trails through the countryside, coastal spots and unusual experiences. In the town and its surroundings, traces of the Order of St. John and the Reformation lead to Vikings, crafts and centuries-old gaming culture. There is also the asphalted nature trail Fodsporet, colour-marked hiking trails and events with historical connections.

Culture and history

Antvorskov was founded around 1170 on the initiative of Valdemar the Great as the Nordic headquarters of the Order of St. John. Denmark's first Lutheran sermon was also held in Antvorskov in 1525. At the Antvorskov monastery ruins, there are films about the monastery.

The Slagelse Museum features a craftsmen's street from the first half of the 19th century. Visitors can also follow in the footsteps of the young H. C. Andersen and see a Latin school like the one he attended during his stay in Slagelse.

Trelleborg adds another historical dimension: The site is one of the five Danish ring fortresses added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2023. The museum exhibition in Trelleborg provides insights into Viking life. The Trelleborg Museum also offers activities for families, private groups, associations, companies and tour operators.

Experiences

At Gerlev Legepark, children and adults can experience several thousand years of gaming culture and actively take part in the games. More than 100 old games and activities can be discovered there. Since its opening in 1999, Gerlev Legepark has served as an educational centre and living play laboratory where visitors can experiment with gaming culture together with the play facilitators.

The Skovsgaard Mill and Bakery Museum also focuses on vivid insights: Its offerings include functioning workshops and the opportunity to see baking up close.

Nature and trails

Fodsporet is a green corridor through the countryside in southwestern Zealand for nature lovers, cyclists and people of all ages who enjoy sports. The trail runs along a former railway line and connects Slagelse in the north with Næstved in the south and Skælskør in the west. Between Slagelse and Skælskør, Fodsporet is a 49-kilometre asphalted nature trail through the countryside of western Zealand.

In Slagelse, Fodsporet has a health trail and a natural playground. For shorter routes, the Kløverstierne Slagelse comprise four colour-marked hiking trails that begin at Fisketorvet and are between 2.7 and 11.4 kilometres long. All four routes start there; the square is only a few minutes' walk from Slagelse railway station and provides access to public transport.

Coast and events

Kongsmark Strand is located on Musholm Bay, also known as the Great Belt. There is a large car park opposite the beach access. Behind this car park is a shelter with a fire pit belonging to Slagelse Municipality, which can be booked via the Slagelse Municipality website.

A special summer scene is the Gardehusarernes byridt during Slagelse Festuge: Mounted guardsmen from Antvorskov Barracks ride through Slagelse town centre.
