Nykøbing Sjælland combines a harbour atmosphere, urban history and nature experiences with a remarkable concentration of museums and cultural attractions.

Urban history and culture on short discovery tours

One of the oldest architectural remains is Nykøbing Sjælland Church. Its oldest parts date from around 1225; the nave and choir were built at that time using the new technique of fired bricks. The churchyard also tells the story of the town. The surviving funerary monuments document the 19th century, the history of local families and professions that have now almost disappeared.

A special walking tour leads through Nykøbing Sjælland’s nine town passages. They connect Algade with the surrounding districts and are decorated with individually designed works of art. Away from the pedestrian street, this creates a free art experience that can easily be combined with a stroll through the town. The Odsherred Theatre, with its theatre auditorium, is also located in the centre. Odsherred Museum presents cultural and historical periods of the region from antiquity to modern tourism. A replica of the Sun Chariot can also be seen there. For families, the summer activities for children are another specific reason to include the museum in their travel plans. A museum shop and small café round off the visit.

Museums, glass and the history of Anneberg

The Hempel Glass Museum focuses on different forms of glass art. Its permanent exhibitions include historical glass, a modern glass collection, the Heering Glass Collection and sculptures by Viggo Jarl. Those who enjoy exploring individual topics in greater depth can therefore organise their museum visit differently from a walk through the town’s history.

Anneberg Kulturpark offers another distinctive cultural experience. Guided tours, audio walks and exhibitions explore the former psychiatric hospital in Nykøbing Sjælland. The Psychiatry Museum presents the history of psychiatric patients and their treatment from the middle of the Middle Ages to the present day. It also explains the conditions under which people lived and worked in the psychiatric hospital in the 20th century. The grounds include a hospital church and a chapel. The site is considered an architectural treasure in the “Better Danish Building Technique” style and is now one of the largest complexes of this style in Northern Europe. Important for your planning: tours of the Psychiatry Museum must be booked in advance.

Harbour, trails and nature

The Culture Trail is 5.8 km long and leads through Nykøbing Sjælland, around the harbour, through the forest and along Nykøbing Fjord. This allows you to combine a cultural and scenic experience on foot without devoting the entire day exclusively to a museum. Recurring events take place in the harbour of Nykøbing Sj, including the Ovnhus arts and crafts market on the fourth weekend of July and flea markets on selected Fridays in June, July and August.

In the immediate surroundings, Grønnehave Skov offers a well-developed network of paths, a dog forest, a Heart Trail, a barbecue area and several tables and seating groups. Dogs may run free there as long as they remain under the control of their owners. The east-facing slope was once a coastal cliff shaped by the Stone Age sea and gives the forest a geological and historical character as well. Skærby Beach, a sandy beach, is very close to Nykøbing Sjælland and is suitable for swimming.
