Vejle Municipality: Holiday apartment between hiking trails and UNESCO World Heritage
Vejle Municipality combines expansive landscapes and cultural sites with a network of hiking and cycle routes. With 850 kilometres of hiking trails and more than 1,300 kilometres of cycle routes, there are plenty of opportunities to explore the municipality actively. The range extends from wetlands and valley landscapes to the Viking Age, Iron Age, modern architecture and art.
Nature
Kongens Kær is a wetland near Vejle with numerous birds, including white-tailed eagles. Rands Fjord combines hilly terrain, grazed meadows, open areas, cultivated fields, wooded valley slopes and viewpoints overlooking the lake. The landscapes open up even further at Randbøl Hede, Frederikshåb Plantage and the Syvårssøerne, where open landscapes and cultural history belong together.
Marked trails at Østengård and Stenager Mølle lead to a viewpoint overlooking Vejle Ådal. At Tørskind and Runkenbjerg, Vejle Å and Egtved Å converge in a broad valley landscape with numerous viewpoints. In Vejle Municipality, Hærvejen offers a cycling and hiking experience, complementing the many other routes through the municipality.
Haraldskær and Kvak Mølle have a large camping and shelter site. At the same time, they form the gateway to Vejle Ådal and feature a free exhibition about the entire Vejle Ådal and Vejle Fjord.
Culture
Vingsted Jernalder is Denmark’s largest reconstructed Iron Age settlement. It offers activities based on the everyday lives of people in the Iron Age. Vingsted Jernalder is open year-round for independent visits.
The Kongernes Jelling visitor and experience centre is located in the monument complex surrounding Jelling Church. It presents the history of the Viking kings Gorm and Harald, their rune stones, the great ship setting and the massive palisade. The burial mounds, rune stones and church at Jelling illustrate pagan Norse culture and the Christianisation of Denmark. The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Jelling was inscribed in 1994 and is located in Vejle Municipality.
Egtvedpigens Verden is a museum in nature at the place where the Egtved Girl was buried approximately 3,400 years ago. Historical sites in the wider region around Vejle also include Guldhøj and Store Kongehøj.
City
With Fjordenhus, Vejle has a striking waterfront building. It consists of four interconnected cylinders, 28 metres high, and connects Vejle Fjord with the city centre. The Arkitekturguide Vejle makes it possible to explore more than 100 buildings, urban spaces and parks, and includes suggestions for walking tours.
The Skulpturguide Vejle midtby offers self-guided sculpture routes with QR-code stories about the artworks and their artists. Vejle Art Museum displays, among other things, local artists, contemporary art, a large collection of graphic works and portrait art.
The churches of Højen Kirke and Hover Kirke are located in the surroundings of Vejle. The hill of Thyras Høj is also in the area. In the wider region around Vejle are Brejning Beach, Hvidbjerg Strand and Rebæk Beach.
