Båstlund: Oak Coppice, Nature Finds and Hills
Accommodation in Båstlund
Old, multi-stemmed oaks, areas under different kinds of management and notable species finds shape the impression of Båstlund. Båstlund Krat offers several points of interest: the southern part is actively managed, while the northern part is unmanaged. There are also figures for the area of Båstlund Hedeplantage and two hills at Bankeshøje, whose dimensions can be compared directly. For a trip focused on landscape and natural history, these offer several specific topics to explore.
Oak Coppice and Different Management Areas
The old, multi-stemmed oaks in Båstlund Krat are a result of earlier coppice management. The term “coppice” refers to a former way of managing woodland; the multi-stemmed oaks show the tree structure that resulted from it. This means the coppice can be understood not only through the appearance of its trees, but also through its history of use. It is also divided into a southern part that is actively managed and a northern part that is unmanaged. These features answer different questions: the oaks tell us about how the landscape developed, while the division describes its current management.
Species Finds in Båstlund Krat
The species finds also highlight different aspects of the area. The fungus Cortinarius subporphyropus, which is rare in Denmark, was found in Båstlund Krat, north of Billund. Psathyrella larga was recorded in the coppice near Billund in 1989 and 1991; two specimens of Orchesia fasciata were documented there in 2002. Båstlund Krat is also part of the main distribution area of the lichen Finger-Korallav. The information can be read in different ways: a dated find locates a specific observation in time, while a distribution statement places a species geographically. Thus, dated examples of finds sit alongside information about the species’ distribution area.
Comparing Areas and Hills
Båstlund Hedeplantage adds a different scale to the description of the area. A historical landscape survey gives an area of 55 hectares, of which 40 hectares were planted. These figures come from that historical survey and may not reflect later changes in land use. Unlike the tree forms and management areas of the coppice, the area figures provide a specific quantitative reference.
At Bankeshøje #1, there is a hill 2 m high and 16 m in diameter. The hill at Bankeshøje #2 also has a diameter of 16 m, but is 1.75 m high. A direct comparison shows the same diameter and a height difference of 25 centimetres. These two specific measurements make it possible to distinguish between the hills.
A Planned Route
The planned motorway between Billund and Give is to run through Båstlund Krat, north of Billund. It is therefore part of the area’s future plans and should be understood as a proposed project.
