Monastery Church and Historic Townscapes

Løgumkloster was founded by Cistercian monks around 1173. Løgumkloster Church was built approximately between 1225 and 1325; during this period, its architectural style changed from Romanesque to Gothic. Together with Sorø Monastery Church, it is considered one of the finest and most significant church buildings of the Danish Middle Ages.

Several details inside deserve particular attention: The reliquary dates from around 1325, while the high altar dates from the late 15th century. During restoration work in the 1920s, the high altar was transferred from Jerne Church near Esbjerg to Løgumkloster. Klostergade also contributes to the historic character of the town. Town houses and the restored cobblestone paving create a historic urban environment there.

The cultural impressions are not limited to the medieval heritage. Den Gamle Biograf is Løgumkloster’s cultural centre and hosts film screenings, theatre, revues and concerts. Kloster Bio shows newer quality films. Kunsthal Holmen presents an exhibition programme featuring contemporary art, providing another way to experience present-day culture.

Another distinctive landmark is Kong Frederik IX’s carillon. It was inaugurated in 1973 to mark the 800th anniversary of Løgumkloster. Following renovation and expansion in 2024–2025, it now consists of 73 bells. At Løgumkloster Refugium, local residents and refugium guests can attend public lectures and musical events throughout the year. The refugium has 47 rooms in classic Danish design from the 1960s and is open to everyone all year round.

Walks Between River Valley and Forest

A river valley and a forest lie directly next to Løgumkloster. The Brede Å Øststien follows the Brede Å from Løgumkloster towards Bredebro. For a shorter loop explicitly described as easy, the green Kløversti is a good option: It is 2.44 kilometres long. In total, the four Kløversti hiking routes begin and end at Markedspladsen. One of the routes leads south of Løgumkloster past the war graves of prisoners of war from the First World War.

Practical Information for Your Visit

Løgumkloster Church is open Monday to Saturday from 10:00 to 17:00 and Sunday from 12:00 to 17:00. During church services and other religious ceremonies, the church and monastery cannot be visited; they close up to one hour before and afterwards for this purpose. Wheelchair users and visitors with mobility scooters can call the church attendants in advance so that they can open the entrance to the car park and provide ramps. Alternatively, access is possible through the refugium.
