Højer Mølle is a Dutch windmill dating from 1857. At 22 metres, it is one of the tallest windmills in Northern Europe. The Højer water tower also provides a prominent viewpoint. A 34-metre-long spiral staircase leads to an observation platform. In clear weather, views open up across the marshland, the Wadden Sea and towards Sylt and Rømø. Nearby, the top of the lock tower at Vidåslusen also offers views over Margrethe Kog and the Wadden Sea. The observation tower at Vidåslusen is accessible via an external staircase. Vidåslusen is also mentioned as a place for observing white-tailed eagles.

Historic sites and regional traditions

Højer has a well-preserved historic district with narrow streets and several listed buildings. These include Kiers Gaard, a listed four-winged marshland farm dating from 1759. Højer was founded in the Middle Ages and was an early port of call for merchant ships and oyster fishermen. From 1759 onwards, oyster harvesting was handled at the oyster warehouse at Kiers Gaard; oysters from Højer were exported as far as the court of Catherine the Great, Empress of Russia.

Højer Church adds to the historic character. The oldest part probably dates from around 1100, while the transepts, tower and porch were probably added in the 15th century. The local annual calendar includes the sheep market at the beginning of September. Smag på Marsken is also part of the programme of town festivals in Højer.
