This landscape character is also clearly visible in Hylkedalen: a dramatic glacial landscape with steep slopes defines the valley, while the Seest Mølleå meanders through the steep pastureland at the bottom of the valley. The area is home to the rare birch mouse, kingfishers and green woodpeckers, as well as a diverse range of plants, fungi and insects.

Marielundskoven encompasses Marielundsøen, surrounded by beech trees, as well as species-rich nature and rare fungi. The woodland has paths and routes for hiking, cycling and horse riding, along with opportunities for fishing and orienteering. In the Stenderup Skovene, there are oaks more than 500 years old, as well as a diverse bird population. Løverodde is a beach on the Little Belt and part of the Stenderup Skovene.

Kolding is part of Lillebælt Nature Park, a marine nature park with one of the densest harbour porpoise populations in the world. Further natural and coastal features come together at Hejlsminde Beach: the gently sloping sandy beach, awarded the Blue Flag, has a bathing jetty, a ramp into the water, a kiosk and toilets. The route around Hejlsminde Nor passes through a unique natural area with white-tailed eagles, western marsh harriers and orchids in bloom in early summer.

Trails and activities

Several paths and routes for walkers, runners and mountain bikers begin in Hylkedalen at the Seest-Hylkedalen Trail Centre in Seest Idrætspark. There are toilets, water, changing rooms and showers. The mountain bike trail in Hylkedalen is 3.2 kilometres long, has approximately 85 metres of elevation gain and includes a descent of just over 600 metres.

The 12-kilometre Hartesløjfen cycling and hiking route connects Ferup Sø with Harteværket. It passes through a landscape of lakes, streams and canals and includes a cable ferry across Ferup Sø and an exhibition in the old lock house. Troldhedestien follows a former railway line from Kolding towards Ferup and Kirsbøl through woodland and past beautiful viewpoints.

For longer distances, there is the Kongeåstien: a 71-kilometre marked hiking route with ten stages, shelters and experiences relating to nature and cultural history. The Slotssøen rundt route is shorter. It is approximately 3 kilometres long, runs around Slotssøen and leads into Legeparken. Near Christiansfeld lies Christinero, a historic garden complex with paths, benches and small lakes.

Dybvadbro Station is a green meeting place for outdoor activities and was the first station on the private railway that connected Kolding with Troldhede. Close to Kolding city centre, Legeparken offers a large playground, Mooncars and pedal boats. The complex also includes picnic shelters, public toilets, a kiosk and four barbecue areas.
