The church probably dates from around 1100 and has lime paintings on the chancel vault and in the apse behind the altar. The apse painting is dated to approximately 1150–1175 and is considered one of Denmark’s oldest lime paintings.

Selsø Kirke also has a distinctive historical character: It was originally a round church. Selsø Slot was built in the 1570s by the nobleman Jakob Ulfeldt. In the Empire rooms, visitors can see Baroque paintings and wallpapers. Throughout the year, Selsø Slot hosts various events and activities for children and adults, including Sommeronsdage i naturen, concerts, lectures and Herregårdenes dag.
