Veliká Ves: Apartments and Holiday Homes

Veliká Ves combines distinctive bodies of water within the village with Baroque architecture and settlement history dating back to prehistoric times. Between the village square, church, château and historic traces, a multifaceted picture of this place emerges.

Water and Landscape

The Dubá stream flows through Veliká Ves and feeds two ponds on the village square, situated on either side of the road. Veliká Ves lies above the confluence of the Dubá and Leská streams. In the past, the Dubá stream powered a mill in Veliká Ves.

Geographical Location

A local road from Chotěbudice connects Veliká Ves with the Kadaň–Podbořany main road.

Culture and Architectural History

The Church of St. James is an 18th-century Baroque church built on the site of an older predecessor. In front of its western portal stand statues of Saint John of Nepomuk and Saint Augustine dating from 1773. The bell tower has a sundial on its southern side and the face of a mechanical clock on its eastern side.

Veliká Ves Château also reflects different construction phases: the Augustinians of Karlov built it between 1662 and 1762 as the provost's summer residence. From 1890 to 1896, it was rebuilt in the Neo-Renaissance style. The former cemetery gate from 1678 was transformed into a war memorial.

Traces of the Past

Archaeological finds in the cadastral area of Veliká Ves attest to settlement during large parts of prehistory and the early historical period. The sand pit west of Veliká Ves yielded the greatest concentration of archaeological finds; advance archaeological rescue excavations took place there in 1974 and 1975. Hops were already being grown in Veliká Ves at that time.

Places and Events

The former farmyard of Veliká Ves Château is now used for agrotourism and various social events. The Svatojakubská pilgrimage took place in Veliká Ves in 2006 and every year from 2015 to 2022.
