At Háj, woodland landscapes, traces of history and distinctive mountain meadows meet. The Vápenka limeworks are located in the woodland landscape between Háj u Loučné pod Klínovcem and Kovářská. They preserve two octagonal Rumford shaft kilns, as well as the remains of other buildings from the original complex, which was built in the mid-19th century. The limeworks were fully restored in 2019 and are now open to the public.
Nature
The Horská louka u Háje area lies in the valley of the Černá voda stream and is part of the Novodomské rašeliniště–Kovářská bird protection area. The mountain meadow features a mosaic of various mountain meadow types, including peat meadows, wet meadows with melancholy thistle, meadowsweet stands, golden oat-grass meadows and matgrass meadows. These are complemented by transitions to wet and peat spruce forests. Horská louka u Háje also protects a peat-rich mountain meadow with rare and endangered plant species.
Routes and Trails
Several described routes connect Háj with the surrounding natural and cultural sites. The 15 km Loučná–Háj–Vápenka–Kovářská–České Hamry and back cycling loop is an easy bike ride with 295 m of elevation gain and is also suitable for children. The Loučná pod Klínovcem educational trail has 13 stations and is just under 17.5 km long. The Loučenský Circuit leads via Háj up to Meluzína and offers views of Oberwiesenthal and Loučná pod Klínovcem.
The 8 km Kolem Vápenky Nordic walking loop offers views of the former Vápenka limeworks, Palouk mrtvých and the Švédský pomník.
Winter Sports
The Klínovec Ski and Snowboard School has its visitor address at Háj 178, 43191 Loučná pod Klínovcem. During the winter season, it offers public ski and snowboard lessons for children and adults. For lessons, the school has two private lifts and its own gentle slopes with a safe run-out. Every year, there are several public beginner courses for skiing or snowboarding, including groups for complete beginners and slightly more advanced participants.
