Culture and History

The Church of St. Barbara in Otvice is a Neo-Gothic building from the early 20th century. The present church was begun in 1902 after the Baroque church from 1655 was demolished in 1897 because of its poor structural condition. After St. Barbara had been closed since the 1950s, it was blessed in September 2015 and reopened for liturgical use.

At the western edge of the village stands the Otvice water tower, the municipality’s only listed building. It was designed by Adolf Niklas and is an approximately 15-metre-high structure with a cylindrical shape.

The first surviving written mention of Otvice dates from 1295. At that time, Bedřich and Dětřich ze Šumburku confirmed the transfer of the village of Otvice to the Teutonic Order in Chomutov.

On the Way and Bodies of Water

A cycle path from Chomutov to Strupčice runs through Otvice. The Chomutov–Strupčice cycle path is not intended for motor vehicles; most of it was built on the trackbed of a disused railway line. The Otvický potok, also called Hutní, also flows through Otvice and is fed by drainage from the three Otvické rybníky ponds.

Water Sports

Three Otvické rybníky ponds border Kamencové jezero along its eastern shore. The largest of the Otvické rybníky ponds is locally called Banda. At Wake Park na Bandě, a water-ski cable lift with various obstacles offers opportunities for water skiing and wakeboarding. Wake Park na Bandě includes a rental service and servicing for the required equipment.

Events

The municipal calendar lists May parades through the entire municipality for Otvice on 1 May 2025 and 1 May 2026. It also lists a Walpurgis Night celebration at the football pitch in Otvice for 30 April 2025.
