Žíšov: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

Žíšov reveals its character around the village square: this is where you encounter the architectural style known elsewhere in South Bohemia as “peasant Baroque”. Farmsteads stand around the village square; the two other streets contain smaller agricultural buildings.

Townscape and history

The history of the village includes the chapel in Žíšov. It was built in 1837 by the local judge Jan Šafránek on the site of a bell tower after the bell there had been stolen several times. It was originally dedicated to Saint John of Nepomuk; on 26 June 1907, it was consecrated to Saint Anne.

Music and tradition

Žíšov is also associated with Matěj Kubeš, who was born in Žíšov on 13 January 1892 and founded his own brass band, “Blaťácká kapela”. During his lifetime, he composed around 300 pieces for small brass ensembles. The song “Okolo Žíšova” was performed for the first time in 1999 at a celebration by Kubešova Soběslav.

The Masopust tradition in Žíšov includes a masked procession with stops at local homes. A celebration also takes place in the village square as part of an international brass music festival held in South Bohemia on the third weekend of every July.

Nature

The Doubí u Žíšova natural monument protects part of a natural acidophilic oak forest in the floodplain of the Lužnice. Its protection zone also protects wet floodplain meadows with temporary and permanent pools, which are home to specially protected animal and plant species.

Surroundings and cycle paths

The GW Selského baroka cycle route runs from Veselí nad Lužnicí via Žíšov to Borkovice. The “In the Footsteps of Peasant Baroque” cycling tour is 24 kilometres long.
