Kotovice combines a clearly recognizable village character with a multifaceted history. The rural farmstead No. 10 is particularly illustrative: it has a preserved façade and remains a listed historic building. At the same time, it is located on the eastern edge of the southern side of Kotovice’s irregular village green.
Culture and History
Kotovice was first mentioned in 1272 in connection with Chotěšov Monastery, to which the village belonged at that time. The village’s educational history dates back to the 19th century. The German school in Kotovice began operating in 1898 and closed in 1945. The building was later used as a classroom for one of the two classes at the former primary school in Kotovice. In addition, after 1918, the former Czech minority school was built for children from the surrounding Czech villages. In 2000, it was converted into four residential units.
An important cultural monument is located in nearby Záluží near Kotovice: Dvůr Gigant was originally established as a monastic farmstead and was rebuilt by 1662. The site is still associated with a tradition, as the traditional Advent charity evening at Dvůr Gigant reached its 22nd edition in 2025. In the wider region around Kotovice, there is also the Cathedral of St. Bartholomew in Pilsen, a church.
Landscape
Kotovice is located on the western edge of the Pilsen Basin at an elevation of approximately 365 to 385 metres above sea level. The landscape around Záluží includes several notable bodies of water and a protected tree. Near Dvůr Gigant, in front of house No. 35, stands a protected large-leaved lime tree that is approximately 360 years old and almost 34 metres tall.
Dvorský rybník is located 500 metres west of Dvůr Gigant, covers 4 hectares of water surface, and is used for recreation and sporting activities. On the southern side of Záluží, there is also a body of water created by the flooding of a sandstone quarry, which is used for fish farming and recreation.
Surroundings
In the immediate surroundings of Kotovice are Jetelový vrch hill [Chotěšov-Hoříkovice] and Tříkopec hill [Přehýšov]. The surrounding area also includes Výchoz hill [Hradec u Stoda] and Šibeniční vrch hill [Úherce u Nýřan].
