Starý Maletín: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Starý Maletín lies in a basin almost entirely surrounded by forests in the western part of the Mírovská vrchovina highlands.

Nature and Landscape

Sandstone was quarried in the vicinity of Maletín from the 16th century onwards and was later increasingly used as a material for large structures and sculptures. At the Kubíčkův lom quarry, there is an educational trail about Maletín sandstone and an outdoor photographic gallery with captions about sandstone fossils of plants and animals.

Culture and History

The parish Church of St Nicholas in Starý Maletín dates from 1804–1805; its grounds include a cemetery, a perimeter wall and gates. A locally sourced stone cross dating from 1750, located by the parish house, is also part of the church grounds. The cemetery’s perimeter wall dates from the early 19th century.

The Calvary ensemble is located in the cemetery behind the Church of St Nicholas and dates from 1848. It depicts Christ on the cross, as well as Mary Magdalene, Our Lady of Sorrows and Saint John the Evangelist.

The village streetscape also includes House No. 1, a masonry vernacular-architecture building from the first half of the 19th century, richly decorated with Maletín sandstone and featuring a portal dating from 1839. A Baroque statue of Saint John of Nepomuk dates from the second quarter of the 18th century and is attributed to the sculptor J. H. Heintz. In the centre of the village stands the Marian Column, a Baroque sculpture dating from 1725 that was supplemented in 1883.

Emilie Schindlerová was born in Starý Maletín on 22 October 1907.
