Horní Benešov tells its story through centuries of mining: The town was founded in 1253 as a mining town, and its silver mines were among the oldest silver mines in the country. Mining was carried out here, with interruptions, until 1992. This long development forms the historical backdrop to the sights and trails around the town.

Culture and History

The cultural monuments of Horní Benešov include the Gothic parish church of St. Catherine and the wall surrounding it. St. Catherine’s is a Baroque building on medieval foundations. The cemetery chapel of the Virgin Mary was built in 1893 and has a uniform neo-Gothic interior. Another historical feature is the sandstone statue of St. John of Nepomuk, a Baroque sculpture from the second half of the 18th century.

History can also be encountered outside the built-up area. The Lichnovské šance are considered either a fortification from the Thirty Years’ War or artillery entrenchments from the Seven Years’ War. A forest path leads to them from Luhy, a district of Horní Benešov, running north.

Activities and Trails

Regional cycle route No. 6160 runs through the cadastral area of Horní Benešov. Bus route 811 operates between Krnov and Horní Benešov. In Luhy, hobby-horsing training also takes place every Monday from 4:00 p.m. at the sports field.

HHC/HB MAAT (Hobby Horse Club Horní Benešov) is an official regional member club of the Česká Hobby Horsing Asociace. Clubs of this kind hold regular training sessions that you can join.
