Hranice lies in the landscape of the extensive Smrčiny Nature Park, which stretches across the Karlovy Vary Region, particularly the Aš salient, and also extends into neighboring Germany. Around Hranice, the nature park offers varied terrain for hiking and cycling amid a landscape of coniferous forests, peat bogs, spring areas, and lively streams.

In the immediate vicinity, Bystřina–Lužní potok includes natural dystrophic lakes and ponds as well as moisture-loving tall-herb fringe communities; species found there include the marsh fritillary, brook lamprey, and freshwater pearl mussel. Also nearby is Hoher Stein, a 636 m-high rock formation with a preserved stone lookout tower, accessible from Hranice via hiking trails.

In the immediate vicinity, the freshwater pearl mussel breeding center at Huschermühle offers visits by prior arrangement, focusing on the conservation of the freshwater pearl mussel.

Trails

The “Na cestě k Trojstátí” educational trail forms an approximately 18 km circular route that begins directly at Masarykovo náměstí in Hranice. Nine main information panels provide information about the local landscape, settlement in the border region, and the history of the Iron Curtain.

The EuroVelo 13 cycle route passes through Hranice, enters the Czech Republic at Trojstátí, and connects near Pastviny with cycle route 2058. Cycle route 2057 begins at the Ebmath border crossing, passes through the center of Hranice, and continues via Pastviny toward Aš and Skalka u Chebu. Cycle route 2058 begins at Krásňany, passes through the center of Hranice to Trojstátí, and connects at Pastviny with EuroVelo 13 and at Aš with cycle route 2057.

The cross-border Mockelbahn cycle route begins at Hranice railway station and follows the former Mockelbahn railway line through dense forest, passing the former Freiberg station and continuing to Adorf (Vogtland); it is 8.52 km long.

Culture

The roots of the Evangelical Church of St. Martin in Hranice date back to the 14th century. The church was extensively rebuilt in 1719, with the nave designed in the Romanesque style. Its furnishings include an original clock mechanism from 1881, which is considered a technical monument.

The Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary acquired its present pseudo-Romanesque appearance in 1894. Knihovna a Muzeíčko houses a small local museum that shares its premises with the adult library; the ground floor also contains an information center and a café.

History

In the immediate vicinity, the historic main border stone I/1 marks the Czech-Bavarian border and bears the year 1844. In the former cemetery of Trojmezí, two graves remain in a wooded setting near preserved war memorials.

The former settlement of Kaiserhammer was established at the beginning of the 15th century as a water-powered hammer mill specializing in the processing of iron ore. At its former site, remains of an iron ore adit have survived in the immediate vicinity, recalling the area’s industrial past. At the Old Cemetery in Studánka, predominantly old German gravestones have survived in the immediate vicinity, bearing witness to the former history and culture of the place.

In the immediate vicinity, at a crossroads of the roads toward Prex, Hranice, and Trojstátí, a stone atonement cross stands beside a stone bridge. At a location in the immediate vicinity, a fatal duel took place between two officers; one of them was killed.
