Poschetzau: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Božičany combines a local history dating back to the Middle Ages with distinctive buildings, traces of kaolin mining and cycle paths through the surrounding area. Between the chapel, village square, ponds and former mining sites, a multifaceted picture of the village emerges.

History and Villagescape

Božičany was founded before 1359 as a Waldhufendorf, a forest-strip village along a stream. One of the defining buildings is St Michael’s Chapel, a Baroque chapel dating from the second half of the 18th century. It was built with funds from the faithful and the church and was entered into the state list of cultural monuments of the Czech Republic on 29 October 1992.

In the centre of Božičany, the monument to the victims of the First World War stands on the village square on the left bank of the Černý potok. It was erected in 1933 on the basis of a design by Willy Heinz on the bank of the Černý potok. Further architectural traces can be found in Villa No. 66, an architecturally interesting building from the 19th or 20th century with Art Nouveau features. Courtyard No. 10 also contains a building highlighted as being of particular interest.

Landscape and Traces of Mining

The former use of the landscape also remains visible: the small depression of the Sírius mine can still be seen to the left of the road to Nová Role. Osmóza Park forms a natural oasis beside a pond on the site of a former kaolin mine. The park provides a shady place to stop and rest by the water.

Routes and Local Events

The 11 km-long Vintířov–Chodov–N. Role cycle route runs through the northern part of the Božičany cadastral area. In addition, the approximately 16.5 km-long “Klidný okruh podhůřím” cycling loop between Nová Role, Božičany and Chodov runs mostly along quiet roads and cycle paths.

A local speciality is the fishing competitions held on the ponds: the MO ČRS Božičany organises them every year in May on the local ponds.
