Knezeves: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Kněževes combines an unusual observation site with a multifaceted local history: the spotting platform near Kněževes is a place for plane spotting, while the village features Baroque buildings, a chapel, and traces of a former fortress.

Geographical Location

Kněževes lies above the Únětický potok on the Pražská plošina, about 10 km from Prague and directly on the boundary of the area of Prague-Ruzyně International Airport. The Únětický potok rises in Kněževes u Prahy.

The spotting platform can be reached on foot via an unpaved gravel path from the adjacent Na Staré silnici road. Parking is available nearby, about 100 metres from the platform; Kněževes can also be reached by bus.

Culture and History

At house no. 36, the Baroque Na Slovance gate forms part of a late-Baroque farmstead. The gate features a split triangular pediment and a half-length figure of Saint John of Nepomuk. The Na Slovance bell tower is also late Baroque and dates from 1802. The statue of Saint John of Nepomuk dates approximately from the second half of the 18th century.

Archaeological finds from the Neolithic period, the Únětice culture, and the 8th to 9th centuries have been documented in Kněževes. The historical record also includes the fortress of Kněževes, which was first mentioned in 1383 and no longer existed by 1575.

The Chapel of Saint Wenceslas was built in 1736 using funds from the Seminary of Saint Wenceslas run by the Jesuits in Prague. It was expanded and restored in 1882, at which time it received its present pseudo-Romanesque appearance. During restoration work in 2014, murals from 1904 were discovered and restored. The annual Svatováclavské posvícení complements the historical monuments of Kněževes.
