Káraný: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Káraný is situated at the confluence of the Elbe and Jizera rivers. About 500 metres upstream from this confluence, the pedestrian and cycle bridge to Toušeň carries the pedestrian and cycle route as well as a medium-pressure gas pipeline across the Elbe.

Nature

Grado is a former oxbow of the Elbe. Lipovka is a remnant of the original floodplain forest along the Elbe, while Václavka has been designated a state nature reserve.

Paths and Water

The “Naučná stezka Údolím Labe” educational trail connects Lysá nad Labem, Káraný and Čelákovice. It is 21 km long, has 24 stations with information panels, and on the described route passes Grado and a footbridge over the Elbe. In the vicinity of Káraný, the Jizera 1 fishing area extends from the river’s mouth into the Elbe near Toušeň to the weir of the Kačov power station; fishing from a boat is permitted.

Cycling

Cycle route 0041 Káraný–Kochánky passes through Káraný and runs via Sojovice and Předměřice to Kochánky. The Greenway Jizera also passes through Káraný on its way back to the Elbe near Lázně Toušeň. Káraný is a gateway to the Císařské lesy forests; unpaved forest paths lead from Káraný as far as Zelená bouda.

History and Culture

The Chapel of St John of Nepomuk was built in 1907 in the centre of the original village on Václavská Street. The Káraný waterworks complex was officially commissioned on 1 January 1914. Following its commissioning, the Káraný waterworks supplied Prague with 880 litres of drinking water per second from the region. In the vicinity of Káraný there is also the open woodland chapel “U svatého Václava”, which dates from around 1696 and was one of three natural hermitages located close to one another.
