Another option is Josefov’s educational trail for children, with a short version measuring 5.5 kilometres and a long version measuring 10.5 kilometres. The trail has seven stops featuring playful tasks.
The Josefovský Geocaching route features eight geocaches at interesting locations in Josefov and the surrounding area. Cyclists can also choose from described routes: Cycle Route 2178 runs through Josefov along the road towards Krajková, while Cycle Route 2179 follows the road connection between Habartov, Josefov, and Hřebeny.
Culture and History
The history of Josefov is closely connected with Hartenberk Castle (Hartenberg, Hertenberg). Hartenberg Castle was founded in 1196 on the right bank of the Svatava near an important trade route from Erfurt.
Visits to Hartenberg Castle are only possible with a guided tour. The main palace houses a permanent exhibition on ministerial castles. The Chapel of Saint Joseph is part of the site’s sacred architectural history: it was built in the Baroque style and restored with grants from the Karlovy Vary Region and partly through a public collection.
Geographical Location
At an educational trail near Josefov, visitors can see preserved remains of medieval mining. These include numerous adits, collapsed shafts, prospecting pits, rows of prospecting pits, and barren spoil heaps.
The Cibulka Lookout Tower on Šibeniční vrch near Oloví is freely accessible year-round and offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Approximately 3 kilometres from Josefov, Lake Medard is being filled as part of the reclamation of the mining area. The area is currently temporarily protected and serves as a refuge for waterfowl.
