Kamen: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Kamen takes its name from a large, isolated rock with a flat top. In medieval records, the site appears as Visoka stijena and Magna petra. In 1239, a fortification called Kod kamena was commissioned as a refuge from marauders. After 1420, Kamen served as a small fortress protecting against Ottoman incursions; Ottoman troops held the site from 1571 to 1648.

History

The remains of the medieval Kamen fortress are described as one of Split’s most important fortification resources. The Church of St. Peter in Kamen and its archaeological site are listed in the Register of Cultural Monuments under number Z-5172.

Churches

The Church of the Holy Archangel Michael was built in its present form in 1879 and restored in 1909. It stands on the site of an older church dating from 1675 and preserves a late-18th-century painting: the Madonna and Child with Saints George and Michael by Feliks Tironi. The complex also includes a freestanding bell tower built in the form of a tower on a nearby cliff.

Peter was first mentioned in 1227 and was built in the late 12th or early 13th century. The single-nave building has a semicircular apse. The façade features a stone cross and a small quatrefoil rose window. The church is located near Brižine in Badu below the village of Kamen. After the area was liberated from Ottoman rule, it was expanded in 1675.

The parish lists separate winter and summer Mass schedules for the Church of the Holy Archangel Michael, with services on Sundays and weekdays.

Music and Culture

Klapa Kamen was founded by Ante Barić in 1958 and has been continuously active since reuniting in 1974. The group performed at 34 editions of the Omiš Festival of Dalmatian Klapas and won 21 awards there. Klapa Kamen also held more than ten concerts at KD Vatroslav Lisinski and performed at more than ten Split Festivals.

Restoration

The restored Templar Church of St. Peter was blessed on June 28, 2026. It was intended to serve as a place of prayer and spiritual fellowship. The restoration project aimed to reopen the Church of St. Peter to the faithful. Special sightseeing tours were designed for Kamen.
