The fortress and ecclesiastical history

The fortress consists of three enclosed sections, each with its own entrance. It is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. The clearly structured layout and opening hours give you practical information for fitting a visit into your daily schedule. The Church of St John is first mentioned in the mid-14th century. Its construction is associated with the period when nobles from the Šubić family ruled Klis in the 13th and 14th centuries.

The parish church in Klis also tells a story of architectural changes: it was built in the Varoš neighbourhood below the fortress. From 1900 to 1902, the new single-nave church was expanded into a three-nave building based on a design by architect Ćiril Metod Iveković. Inside is a cycle of murals by Vjekoslav Parać from 1939. Its scenes draw on Klis’s medieval history; the work is considered one of the most significant examples of monumental figurative mural painting in Croatia from the first half of the 20th century. West of the fortress is also Česma, a mihrab fountain with niches and the only surviving monument of its type in Croatia.

Archaeological traces and landscape

The Crkvine archaeological site in Klapavice illustrates life in the Dalmatian hinterland from Late Antiquity to the Late Middle Ages. The Church of St John and an archaeological site lie below Klis in the southeastern part of Kliško polje. Another historical landmark is the archaeological section of the Roman road in the Klapavice–Kurtovići area in Klis and Dugopolje. It is two kilometres long. The road ran from Salona through Klis and the Dugopolje plateau into the Dalmatian interior.

The cultural landscape also includes the Rajčica wells in the Nišćanski gaj area: ten dry-stone-lined wells and a larger communal livestock trough. Kaštel Tartaglia stands on a hill above the village of Konjsko. These places offer a different focus from the fortress, complementing the historical themes with rural structures and traces of everyday life.

Hiking and culinary discoveries

The Debelo Brdo hiking trail is 4,500 metres long and very difficult and demanding. It passes through steep, rocky terrain covered with maquis.
