Culture and History

Drvenik’s cultural heritage includes the Gradina fortification, St. George’s Church, the Kostanića greb monument, the remains of 13th-century houses in Staro selo, and the route across Biokovo associated with Alberto Fortis and Hasanaginica. St. George’s Church is located in Staro selo above Donja Vala and has been protected as a cultural monument by the state since 1976. Its oldest part is dated to the 15th century.

The Gradina fortress was already mentioned in the 15th century; in 1686, it was occupied and burned down by Ottoman troops. The ruins of the fortress lie on a hill called Gradina at 297 metres above sea level. The Gradina fortress complex is considered one of Drvenik’s significant and comparatively well-preserved sites.

The cycling routes in Drvenik range from well-maintained promenades along the sea to hilly macadam roads. The “Alberto Fortis” downhill route is intended for riders seeking adrenaline. The Alberto Fortis trail is the stone path to Drvenik’s old village.

When kayaking in Drvenik, visitors can discover hidden beaches, coves, and reefs. Hikes from Drvenik can include an ascent to the nearby summit of Sokolić; it is 788 metres high.
