Tisno extends partly across the mainland and partly across the island of Murter. A mechanical drawbridge connects the two parts of the town, giving the area a distinctive layout for a stay between the island and mainland sides. The historic centre is on the island side, on the coast below Brošćica Hill. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can first consider which side of the town best suits your holiday plans.

Local history and religious tradition

Original stone paving has been preserved in several places in the old town centre. The history of the bridge connection is also part of Tisno’s character: an old bridge was built in the early 18th century and replaced by a movable bridge in 1968. The Church of St Roch stands on the Tisno coast, known as Rat. It was built around 1651 and measures 13 m × 8.6 m. The Church of the Holy Spirit was built in 1548 and renovated in the Baroque style in 1640.

Another historical feature is the eleven villas that have survived from the period when wealthy families from Italy migrated to Tisno in the 18th century. The garden around Villa Meštrov was transformed into a Baroque park. Those interested in different historical periods will find traces of the town’s development and architecture here, alongside the churches.

The religious tradition is associated with the Feast of Our Lady of Karavaj. It is celebrated in Tisno every year on 26 May, and believers come for it from the surrounding counties and beyond. The pilgrimage route to the shrine has 214 steps. The date and the steps give a specific cultural and local context to a visit.

Archaeological traces in Ivinj

An archaeological site in Ivinj tells the story of different eras. The site includes a three-aisled basilica dating from the mid-5th century. Next to it is an Early Christian baptistery with a hexagonal basin. In addition, 900 graves dating from the 15th century were found by the basilica. At the Church of St Martin, the walls of a Roman villa rustica from the 2nd or 3rd century were discovered. These finds make Ivinj an appealing addition for travellers interested in early building and burial history as well as the coast and island.

Sea, landscape and activities

The municipality brings together islands, sea, a lake, freshwater springs, karst fields and peloid in a relatively small area. On the south-eastern edge of Tisno is the natural, mostly rocky beach of Sv. Andrija, surrounded by a pine forest. Above Rastovac beach are a children’s playground, a basketball court, a football pitch and a miniature golf course. This makes it possible to consider different interests when planning a holiday without conflating the individual places and facilities.

For cycling trips, there are ten routes of varying lengths connected to the island of Murter and the mainland part of the municipality; six of them run on Murter. They are described as easy to moderately difficult. Cycling route 211, “Staza crkve”, connects the island with the municipality’s mainland hinterland. If you like to shape your days around cycling, you can take this selection and the desired type of route into account when choosing where to stay.

There is also a special way to explore underwater: the educational maritime trail in Sv. Andrija Bay in the Murter Channel consists of seven panels and can be explored by both freediving and scuba diving. Professionally organised diving centres in Tisno offer diving opportunities for beginners and experienced divers. This provides different ways to experience the maritime side of the area.

Getting here and regional highlights

Tisno is connected to major European cities by bus routes via bus stations in Zagreb, Šibenik, Zadar and Split. Salted sardines and Dalmatian pršut with cheese and olives are considered local culinary traditions. The Vransko jezero Nature Park is in the wider region: its extensive reed beds and narrow flooded meadows are important habitats for birds. Nature, culture and maritime experiences can therefore provide different focuses for a trip.
